Book Review: Munkle Arvur and the Big Dry, by Nikki Slade Robinson

Available now at bookstores nationwide.

Munkle Arvur and the Big Dry is author-illustrator Nikki Slade Robinson’s follow up to the cv_munkle_arvur_and_the_big_drysuccessful Munkle Arvur and the Bod. Munkle Arvur is a loveable caring fellow out to keep his community and the environment safe. In The Big Dry the nasty Bod is at it again, this time cutting the town’s water supply. Will Munkle Arvur be able to stop him?

The story is neatly illustrated, the text inventive with many new words to savour. There is an environmental message to conserve and to share water.

What I would have really liked to see were a few tips on how to actually conserve and share. Munkle Arvur is simply trying to stop Bod in his tracks. But is that enough? There is not one individual evil Bod out there bent on destroying  the environment. There is a bit of Bod in all of us.

Munkle Arvur as a character really lends itself as a means to encourage children to actively protect the environment. Munkle Arvur definitely needs a website where younger readers can learn more about what they and their families can do to look after the environment.
