Lonely Planet Reveals Its Best Destinations, Journeys & Experiences for 2014

Lonely Planet has named Auckland and New Zealand’scv_best_in_travel_2014 West Coast as two of the world’s top destinations for next year in Lonely Planet’s Best In Travel 2014, published this week.

This is Lonely Planet’s ninth eagerly-awaited annual collection of the best places to go and things to do around the world for the year ahead.

Ranked tenth on the book’s list of Top 10 Cities 2014, Auckland is “often overlooked by travellers eager to head for the stellar alpine and lake landscapes further south, but food, arts and exploring the coastal hinterland are all excellent reasons to extend your stay,” Lonely Planet says.  Other cities to make the list are Paris (1), Trinidad (2), Cape Town (3), Riga (4), Zurich (5), Shanghai (6), Vancouver (7), Chicago (8) and Adelaide (9).
West Coast, New Zealand is eighth on the list of Top 10 Regions 2014.  “Those who think they’ve seen it all should prepare for some enlivening surprises,” says Lonely Planet, “Here’s your chance to venture into untamed territory normally well beyond your limits”.  Sikkim (1), The Kimberley (2), Yorkshire (3), Hokuriku (4), Texas (5), Victoria Falls (6), Mallorca (7), Hunan (9) and Ha’apai (10) complete the list.

This new edition of Best in Travel also reveals why Brazil (1), Antarctica (2), Scotland (3), Sweden (4), Malawi (5), Mexico (6), Seychelles (7), Belgium (8), Macedonia (9) and Malaysia (10) have been selected as the Top 10 Countries for next year.

Best in Travel ’s recommendations are drawn from hundreds of ideas submitted by Lonely Planet’s staff, authors and community of travelers, bloggers and tweeters. Their suggestions are then refined by a panel of in-house travel experts, based on scores for topicality, excitement, and that special x-factor. Lonely Planet’s focus is on the merits of each destination and the unique experiences they offer travelers.

Other Best in Travel  2014 highlights include:

  • The best travel experiences for the year ahead in the book’s 17 additional “Top Travel Lists”, including the “Best Value Destinations for 2014” (the Greek Islands score the top spot).
  • More than 35 events mapped out month-by-month in the 2014 Travel Planner, from January’s 500th anniversary of the foundation of Trinidad, Cuba; to South Africa’s Mother City Queer Project in December.
